Ivermectin is an antiparasitic drug that is actively used in the treatment of humans, cattle, pigs, and artiodactyls. The drug is highly effective. It has been studied for a long time and has undergone numerous clinical trials that have proven its safety for humans.
Initially, Ivermectin was used only in the treatment of animals. In veterinary practice, the drug is actively used. This is one of the few drugs that effectively fight helminthiasis in large farm animals. It is available in different forms - tablets, injection solutions.
Pharmacologic effect
The antiparasitic effect of the drug is aimed at combating scabies mites, helminths, lice, i.e. with different groups of parasites. It is used to treat people and animals.
Pharmacodynamics
Ivermectin is used externally, orally and by injection. Under the influence of the drug, neuromuscular impulses are blocked. This provokes paralysis and death of the parasites.
Despite its broad spectrum of action, the drug has low toxicity. Compliance with the instructions for use and dosage rules rarely leads to side effects.
Pharmacokinetics
The drug is characterized by rapid absorption and uniform distribution in tissues. The highest concentration in the blood is reached after approximately 4 hours. The half-life in humans is 12-16 hours.
Indications
The drug effectively copes with infections caused by roundworms. In addition, with the help of this drug you can get rid of lice and various types of mites that parasitize humans. The medicine is indicated for:
- ascariasis
- scabies
- demodicosis
- pediculosis
- onchocerciasis
- trichocephalosis
- strongyloidiasis
- filariasis
- myiases
- enterobiasis
The drug works well in treating itching in the anogenital area.
Before use, consult a doctor. For some diseases accompanied by weakened immunity, the use of Ivermectin is undesirable.
Instructions for use
For human treatment, it is recommended to use Ivermectin tablets.
For adults
The medicine should be taken in the morning on an empty stomach, without chewing the tablet. The average dosage is 12 mg for a person weighing approximately 70 kg. The exact dosage of the drug is determined by the doctor, taking into account the weight and degree of invasion. The doctor also determines how many pills will be needed.
There should be a gap of at least 7 days between doses.
When treating certain diseases, the doctor may prescribe two doses of Ivermectin at once - orally and as an injection. In this case, at least a week should pass before the next use of the drug. The medicine can also be used externally. The ointment is applied to the affected areas of the skin.
Children, newborns
The drug cannot be used to treat newborns and children under 5 years of age and weighing less than 15 kg. For older children with sufficient weight, Ivermectin is prescribed at the rate of 150 mcg of the drug per 1 kg of body weight.
During pregnancy and lactation
The drug is contraindicated for pregnant women and nursing mothers. Particular attention should be paid when planning pregnancy, as side effects may persist for a month and may negatively affect the process of conception.
Contraindications
Ivermectin should not be used if:
- the patient’s body weight is less than 15 kg and age is less than 5 years;
- a woman is carrying a child or breastfeeding;
- the patient suffers from renal or liver failure;
- the patient has an individual intolerance to the components of the drug;
- the patient suffers from asthma or meningitis;
- the patient experiences a general decrease in immunity.
Side effects
Undesirable side effects may occur two days after taking the drug and manifest themselves as:
- fever;
- headache and dizziness;
- drowsy state;
- weaknesses;
- skin rashes and itching;
- diarrhea;
- tachycardia;
- muscle pain;
- swelling;
- enlarged lymph nodes.
It is believed that side effects may be caused not by the toxicity of Ivermectin, but by the massive death of parasites. In rare cases, other side effects may occur, which are more likely related to the disease itself rather than to the drug taken.
Special instructions
Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug is usually accompanied by an allergic reaction, and therefore it is recommended to take Ivermectin simultaneously with antihistamines.
Interaction with other drugs
Ivermectin increases the level of warfarin in the blood, so it should not be used simultaneously with warfarin and phenylamine.
Concomitant use with barbiturates, sedatives and hypnotic psychoactive substances is not recommended, since these drugs increase GABAergic activity.
To avoid side effects, this medicine should not be taken with certain antidepressants such as fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, venlafaxine.
Alcohol compatibility
The use of alcohol and ivermectin is incompatible, since the drug is metabolized in the liver, and when taken with alcohol it has the greatest load.
The liver receives a double blow and reacts with intoxication of the body:
- deterioration in general health;
- decreased concentration;
- drowsiness and dizziness;
- disturbances in brain function;
- loss of consciousness.
